Cheer

Bugs in a Tree and Cheerful Me

Proverbs 15:13 (NIV) A happy heart makes the face cheerful, but heartache crushes the spirit.

Twenty-four years ago I had my first Christmas as a married woman (if you call 20 years old a woman). I had grand ideas for how our “home” (three room apartment) should look. I wanted it to be perfect!

So, I made my husband take me to a Christmas tree farm so we could cut down a real tree. Well, I found my perfect tree, he cut it down and we transported it home. As he lugged it into the apartment all time stopped for me. Apparently, the trees look much smaller in the wide open spaces of the farm than in my tiny apartment. Not only was it too big around, it was too tall.

I was heart-broken and started crying! (I was very mature) Where would we even put it?! We cleared away our kitchen table and placed the tree in our kitchen (we would just eat on the couch). He cut it down so it didn’t scrape the ceiling. It would do.

I got it all decorated with the keepsake ornaments my mom had given me and some that I had made for our first Christmas together. I wrapped the gifts in pretty foil wraps and lots of lace. It was coming together. It was working out…

The next day I got home from work and went to look at my beautiful aromatic tree. When my eyes finally traveled down to the packages, my heart sank. The tree had begun dripping sap on my gifts. Not only that…apparently the tree had been infested with some kind of little bugs that were now dying, falling off the tree, landing in the sap and hardening there…a little Christmas bug graveyard.

Of course, being the grown woman I was, I began crying again.

Our family got some very interesting looking gifts that year. I was mortified. However, it IS pretty funny now, isn’t it?

Find something to be cheerful about today! Perhaps you have a crazy memory from your past that would bring a smile to your face. Surely you do.
