The phone on the wall rings (go back in time to the place of telephones on the wall in the kitchen), “Hello?”
“Hey. Hi. Um. Do you have a can of tomato sauce I can borrow? I’m going to the store tomorrow and can pay you back.”
“Hmmm. Let me check,” I step into the pantry pulling the cord tight, “I do! You’re in luck.”
“I’ll send one of the boys right over! Thanks!”
Tomato sauce, sugar, cream of chicken soup, bread, onion–you name it–the calls have been made, items traded and borrowed. Some neighbors have come and gone, but as new ones arrive, it doesn’t take them long to realize, this is not your ordinary street.
